Creatures Once Thought to be Extinct
1) Elephant Shrew:-
For 50 years, Somali sengi(or elephant shrew) was assumed to be extinct. Until, August 2020, when a team of researchers and academics reported that these tiny creatures were alive and thriving across the Horn of Africa.
2) Terror Skink:-
This lizard was discovered by French Botanist Benjamin Balansa in 1872 while visiting the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia. Considered to be extinct until 2003, when it was rediscovered by scientists.
3)Coelacanth:-
It is so rare that thought to be extinct with
dinosaurs over 65 million years ago.
4)Monoplacophorens:-
A type of mollusks that were thought to be disappeared
around 400 million years ago, and then in 1952, 10 living specimens were
collected from the seafloor near Costa Rica.
5)Neptune’s Cup sponge:-
The last time species was then thought to be extinct.
But in the 1990s a few dead Neptune’s cup sponges turned near Australia.
6)Laotian Rock rat:-{Loanastes
Aenigmamus}
It was first described in 2005 and representing as the
only living representative of an ancient fossil family Datomyidae, that was
thought to have been extinct for 11 million years, since the late Miocene.
7)Cuban Solenodon:-
It is one of the very few mammals that are venomous.
Habitat destruction and invasive species had left this creature teetering on
the brink of extinction. As per WEF, it was never technically extinct but was
thought to be because of its low numbers and rare sightings.
8)Bermuda Petrel:-
The Cahow, or Bermuda petrel, was last sighted on Nonsuch
Island in 1620. Until, when a small no. of birds was spotted nesting in the
east of Bermuda in the 1950s, and the population has since been resurrected.
9)Australian Night parrot:-
It was thought to be extinct after the last recorded
sighting in 1912. Then, in 1990, one found in a state of Queensland was dead.
After 23 years, it was spotted by a researcher, but the precise location of the
sighting was kept secret.
